Firefighters will soon have a new sprinkler system in their expanded and remodeled fire station, thanks to a $28,000 federal grant received 2/24/2005.
Chief Dana Dunn said the town will provide a 10 percent match to the federal funds, and installation of the fire-protection system will begin at the station as soon as weather permits.
Over the past three years Mount Vernon had built a major addition to its fire station, and remodeling of the station is still under way. The sprinkler system is necessary for safe use of the remodeled second floor, which also houses a kitchen.
"The Department has been working on receiving the grant for the last two years and had about given up on it, because a new grant year was about to begin.
Chief Dana Dunn praised firefighter Lt. Jason Beckler for his efforts in writing and obtaining the grant. Jason does grant writing for the department and it takes a lot of time.
